To live a healthy and active life, the weight of the human body must be normal. It should not be overweight or underweight. BMI or body mass index is a term used scientifically to measure an individual’s weight in relation to height. Thus, assessing whether the person is overweight or underweight or normal. BMI is also an indicator of total body fat content. According to the National Institutes of Health, if a person’s BMI is less than 18.5, the person is underweight. The BMI of a healthy weighed person ranges from 18.5 to 24.9. But if a person’s BMI is over 30, the person is considered obese.

Definition: The decrease in the total weight of the human body is called weight loss. It can also be defined in terms of reducing the BMI of an individual. Weight loss can be a goal for overweight people, it is a physiological weight loss. However, in some medical conditions, weight loss can be a pathological side effect. [1]

Weight is a direct indicator of a person’s general health. Maintaining a healthy weight can be difficult, but it has many advantages over being overweight or underweight. A major contributing factor to weight and health is a healthy and nutritious diet. The fit individual can work at full capacity, physically, socially and economically.

On the other hand, an overweight person leads a low quality life; it is a vicious circle in which weight impedes physical activity, and physical inactivity can then cause more weight gain. Being overweight exposes a man to many different health problems. The human heart needs to work harder, leading to problems such as high blood pressure, high cholesterol, which makes the body more vulnerable to diabetes and other problems. Other common diseases in an obese body include various types of cancer, for example, breast and colon cancer, gallbladder disease, stroke, breathing problems and osteoarthritis that affect the joints of the body. Mental problems are also becoming a major concern in obese patients, which includes anxiety, depression and other health problems. Weight loss, therefore, is a common goal in the prevention and treatment of medical cases in obese patients. It can help treat cardiovascular problems, lower cholesterol and also promote healthy blood flow through the body. All this collectively can contribute to overall health and disease management.

Being underweight is still a risk factor for malnutrition. A malnourished body becomes lazy and tired. The body may become deficient in vitamin D or calcium, resulting in osteoporosis due to a lower intake of food. In children and adolescents, growth and development are affected due to poor nutrition. The immune system also slows down, which increases the risk of contracting various diseases and complications during surgery. In females, a low-nutrient diet disrupts the menstrual cycle. Increased hair loss and tooth problems are also due to a less nutritious diet.
