For Sophie Mitchell, being known as the “big one” among her group of friends was something she had become accustomed to.

Her weight has increased in yo-yo since she was 16, and at her worst, she weighed the scales at almost 17 years old.

It wasn’t until she went to her doctor for a regular check-up that Sophie, 27, realized she needed to do something about her weight.

The insurance adviser in Huddersfield, West Yorks, was warned that her blood pressure was so high that she would have to be given medication to control it.

“I was only 24 years old,” she told The Sun. “Then I decided that was enough.”

Sophie has tried different diets in the past and has had some success with Slimming World, but every time she lost weight, she gained weight just as quickly.

She knew she had to find a different solution, so in 2018 she decided to join her local WW group.

“I went on my own, which was a little daunting,” she said.

“I was very nervous when I entered, but the coach was very nice and full of air, so I immediately felt welcome and at ease.”

Sophie lost second place in the first four months and lost another second the following year.

Since then, she has continued to track her weight steadily and is now in 12th place – from size 20 to size 12-14.

Sophie said: “Measuring everything properly made me realize how disproportionately large all my portions had been so far – it was a total game changer.

“I also learned not to put pressure on myself and that helped me not to put everything back on track, as I did in the past.”

Sophie first noticed that her weight had increased when she started college at age 16 and began battling depression.

She said: “I hated it. I went through a difficult time, and as a result, my mental health suffered. This is the beginning of this emotional eating cycle, and I’ve started to overdo it – often in secret.

“At lunch, we would buy boxes of donuts and eat a lot or taste big bags of chips. Then, when I got home, I would eat chocolate bars that I had hidden in my room. For me, eating was a way of coping. ”

She continued: “When I was in a better mental position, I tried to lose weight, but every time I did it, I just put everything back on.

“It simply came to our notice then. Our house was between two convenience stores and several bundled products – it was a recipe for disaster, and we continued to watch the pile of difficulties. “

Before marrying James in 2017, the couple went on diets to feel good on their big day and managed to lose a few pounds.

But Sophie admits that as she settled into her married life, she stopped being aware of what she was eating, and it all came back to haunt her.

She said: “Portions were the problem. I was eating huge bowls of pasta without thinking twice.

“I got to a point where I thought I might just be older.

“I was confident in my own way, so people thought I was fine. I hid behind my character of “being the great friend”, but underneath I lacked a lot of confidence and in the end I was not very happy. “


Her wake-up call was on a routine appointment with her family doctor in the summer of 2018, when her doctor told her she had high blood pressure and would need medication.

Sophie said: “Seeing how my weight affects my health was critical. I didn’t want to take medication in my early twenties.

“I knew a girl at work went to WeightWatchers and lost a stone, so I thought I’d give it a try.”

Sophie lost 8 lbs in the first three weeks and was the motivation she needed to encourage her to finally lose her fourth 12 lbs in the next three years.

She added: “I still have something I would love to lose, but I’m not putting pressure on myself. That’s where I made a mistake in the past and it’s the first time I haven’t put everything back.

“For me, I never felt like I was on a diet and I wouldn’t say I’m on a diet now, because the food you can eat doesn’t feel like a typical ‘diet food’.

“I like to go out with friends, especially at dinner, and before going to WW, I used to check the menu before going out so I could choose something healthy – usually the most boring option.

Sophie’s Top 4 Weight Loss Tips

  1. Be kind to yourself: everyone fights when they try to lose weight, but it doesn’t do you any good. If you’re not going to be nice to yourself, then who is?
  2. Keep an eye on your food: It’s very important to keep an eye on everything you eat. If you have gained weight and feel that it does not work, then this is the easiest way to see why.
  3. Find an exercise you enjoy: If you don’t like Zumba, don’t go to Zumba! There are so many other ways to burn calories, whether it’s dancing or just walking.
  4. Friends: Having someone to lose weight with can be so important. I know that the fact that my mother encourages me to get out of bed to run was the impetus I needed because I don’t want to disappoint her. You can also be there to support each other.

“Now that I’m gone, I order exactly what I want. At first, my friends would say, “You can’t eat this, you’re on a diet,” and I would say, “Actually, yes, I can.”

“I used to go back to my friend’s house and still get packed food – and I was still losing weight.”

Sophie explained: “It’s more of a case of not ordering absolutely everything or making slightly better choices and then including them in your points.

“So if I have a packaged meal or a treat now, I’ll make sure I have a better week next week or the next day.

“It fits your lifestyle and because you get points, there is no guilt – it eliminates the good and bad food situation and, instead, it is about finding a balance.”


Sophie also admits that training or going to the gym is not for her, but she has found a fun alternative way to burn calories.

She said: “I have never been one to exercise. I used to go to a weird Zumba class with half my heart, but I ended up apologizing – and you’ll never catch me in the gym.

“But when my mother started dancing jive, I thought it sounded fun and decided to go with her.

“It simply came to our notice then. Even some of our dances go to weddings, which is always good.

“When the blockage took place, the jive dance was canceled, so I started doing Couch to 5k.

“I said I would try anything, but I would never run – I’m morally opposed,” she joked. “But when my mother said she wanted to do this to me, it was the impulse I needed.

“We go three times a week now. I wouldn’t say I like to run, but it’s nice to go out – we’re going to run and reveal.

“It’s also great to have someone else to motivate you. When the alarm goes off and it’s still dark outside, it’s so easy to want to roll over and go to bed again, but now I have my mother saying she’s waiting for me and you have to wake up.

“We also started tap dancing recently and it’s so much fun. The best part is that you don’t feel like moving and meeting new people. “
